RESUMO

A novel moderately halophilic, Gram-stain-negative and facultatively anaerobic bacterium, designated as strain TBZ242T, was isolated from water of Urmia Lake in the Azerbaijan region of Iran. The cells were found to be rod-shaped and motile by a single polar flagellum, producing circular and yellowish colonies. The strain could grow in the presence of 0.5-10 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 2.5-5 %). The temperature and pH ranges for growth were 15-45 °C (optimum 30 °C) and pH 7.0-11.0 (optimum pH 8.0) on marine agar. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain TBZ242T belonged to the genus Marinobacter, showing the highest similarities to Marinobacter algicola DG893T (98.8 %), Marinobacter vulgaris F01T (98.8 %), Marinobacter salarius R9SW1T (98.5 %), Marinobacter panjinensis PJ-16T (98.4 %), Marinobacter orientalis W62T (98.0 %) and Marinobacter denitrificans JB2H27T (98.0 %). The 16S rRNA and core-genome phylogenetic trees showed that strain TBZ242T formed a distinct branch, closely related to a subclade accommodating M. vulgaris, M. orientalis, M. panjinensis, M. denitrificans, M. algicola, M. salarius and M. iranensis, within the genus Marinobacter. Average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain TBZ242T and the type strains of the related species of Marinobacter were ≤85.0 and 28.6 %, respectively, confirming that strain TBZ242T represents a distinct species. The major cellular fatty acids of strain TBZ242T were C16 : 0 and C16 : 1 ω7c/C16 : 1 ω6c and the quinone was ubiquinone Q-9. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain TBZ242T is 57.2 mol%. Based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genomic data, strain TBZ242T represents a novel species within the genus Marinobacter, for which the name Marinobacter azerbaijanicus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TBZ242T (= CECT 30649T = IBRC-M 11466T). Genomic fragment recruitment analysis showed that this species prefers aquatic saline environments with intermediate salinities, being detected on metagenomic databases of Lake Meyghan (Iran) with 5 and 18 % salinity, respectively.

Preeclampsia, the more severe manifestation of gestational hypertensive disorders, is a major cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Genetic polymorphisms in long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are considered as potential genetic preeclampsia. This study aimed to explore the association between SENCR rs555172 SNP and PE risk in healthy pregnant women compared to women with preeclampsia. A total of 140 healthy pregnant women and 130 preeclampsia cases were included in the study. The rs555172 genotype was determined using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP), and the expression of the SENCR gene was analyzed in 40 placenta tissue samples from both groups. Various statistical approaches were employed to assess the genotypic and allelic frequencies. The results showed no significant difference in the frequency of the rs555172 polymorphism between healthy pregnant women and those with preeclampsia in terms of the dominant (p=0.82), recessive (p=0.39), and over-dominant (p=0.42) models. Additionally, the analysis of SENCR relative expression revealed no significant difference between the two groups (p=0.48). In conclusion, the LncRNA SENCR rs555172(G/A) seems not associated with an increased risk of Preeclampsia in pregnant women.

RESUMO

Conflict and climate change might be present in the same areas and expose communities that struggle with these dual risks, but they do not co-occur in consistent or predictable ways. We question how to effectively adapt to climate change in areas experiencing violence. Conflict can make adaptation to climate change more difficult, but when local conflict patterns are better understood it is possible to introduce climate adaptation measures that are effective and responsive to the needs of the population. Further, we argue that conflict mitigation is not a climate adaptation. Even in conflict zones, the most effective climate adaptations focus on climate-centred technical solutions and poverty reduction, local governance legitimacy, and community-led efforts to cooperate in periods of climate stress. We outline some of these possibilities.

Hypericum perforatum L., is a sprawling, leafy herb that grows in open, disturbed areas, known as St. John's wort, has a variety of secondary metabolites that can be used for medicinal and therapeutic purposes. Heavy metals have become the most dangerous pollutants in the environment. The effect of cadmium chloride, lead nitrate, silver nitrate, methyl jasmonate, and salicylic acid was studied on several morphometric and biochemical features of St. John's wort simultaneously using the Taguchi statistical method. The results showed cadmium chloride and lead nitrate reduced the morphometric and biochemical properties of St. John's wort while salicylic acid compensated for the adverse effects of heavy metals. Simultaneously, use of salicylic acid and silver nitrate with cadmium chloride and lead nitrate reduced the toxic effects of these metals on morphometric properties. Methyl jasmonate improved growth characteristics at low levels and inhibited at higher levels. Also, according to the results, salicylic acid could reduce the effects of heavy metals on the biochemical properties, while silver nitrate acts like heavy metals, especially at higher levels. Salicylic acid reduced the harmful effects of these heavy metals and at all levels was able to create a better induction effect on St. John's wort. These elicitors mainly changed the adverse effects of heavy metals by strengthening the pathways of the antioxidant system in St. John's wort. The research assumptions were validated, which suggests that the Taguchi method could be considered in an optimum culture of medicinal plants under different treatments such as heavy metals and elicitors.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as priority organic pollutants, are capable of accumulation in plants. Phenanthrene (Phe) is one of the most abundant low-molecular-weight PAH in the environment which is commonly used as a model PAH in many phytoremediation studies and as a representative compound for all PAHs group. This paper highlights the uptake, translocation, and accumulation of Phe by growing proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) in a pot experiment, subjected to 500, 1000, 1500, and 2000 ppm of Phe treatment after 15 and 30 days. Phe naturally existed in P. miliaceum and its concentration showed a time-dependent reduction in treated plant tissues as well as in perlites. Phe concentration in shoots was higher than in roots. During the aging process, the uptake of Phe was diminished whereas translocation factor (TF) demonstrated an overall increasing trend among treatments. The shoot concentration factor (SCF) values were higher than those of root concentration factor (RCF) on both days 15 and 30 and the highest values for both parameters were achieved in 500 ppm of Phe. Both RCFs and SCFs generally tended to decrease with the increase of perlite Phe concentrations. These results suggested that Phe tended to transfer to the shoots and be metabolized there. The Phe concentration revealed a significant decline in all levels of treatment on both 15 (84 to 96%) and 30 (76 to 94%) days. Therefore, the presence of P. miliaceum was effective in promoting the phytoremediation of Phe polluted perlites.

Cancer cells reprogram their metabolisms to achieve high energetic requirements and produce precursors that facilitate uncontrolled cell proliferation. Metabolic reprograming involves not only the dysregulation in glucose-metabolizing regulatory enzymes, but also the enzymes engaging in the lipid and amino acid metabolisms. Nevertheless, the underlying regulatory mechanisms of reprograming are not fully understood. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) as functional RNA molecules cannot translate into proteins, but they do play a regulatory role in gene expression. Moreover, ncRNAs have been demonstrated to be implicated in the metabolic modulations in breast cancer (BC) by regulating the metabolic-related enzymes. Here, we will focus on the regulatory involvement of ncRNAs (microRNA, circular RNA and long ncRNA) in BC metabolism, including glucose, lipid and glutamine metabolism. Investigation of this aspect may not only alter the approaches of BC diagnosis and prognosis, but may also open a new avenue in using ncRNA-based therapeutics for BC treatment by targeting different metabolic pathways.

Nano-graphene oxide (NGO) is an engineered nanostructure that is used in various fields including biology, chemistry, medicine, and environmental protection. This kind of highly used nanomaterial (NM) is being released and accumulated gradually in nature and can have some adverse influences on living organisms including plants. Soybean as a cultivated plant with a high importance in food industry, but sensitive to stresses, was chosen in the present study to be examined in terms of proteomic, biochemical, and anatomical properties under the NGO stress. Accordingly, a 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) approach was adopted for proteomic analysis of the NGO treated soybean roots, where significant changes were observed in the abundance of 48 proteins. MALDI TOF/TOF analysis revealed the upregulation of the proteins involved in the redox regulation in plants. Furthermore, anatomical examination of soybean roots under light microscopy showed that the NGO could enter into the root epidermis through the apoplastic pathway and accumulated in some parts of the root. With increasing NGO concentration, the diameter of the vascular apertures increased and then decreased at higher concentrations. To evaluate the toxicity of NGO, some of the growth parameters including fresh and dry weight, and height of the shoots, as well as some stress-related biochemical properties such as H2O2 production, antioxidant enzymes activity, and phenolics and flavonoids contents were measured. The results indicated that NGO could cause an oxidative stress, which can be considered a toxic effect evoking antioxidative and detoxification mechanisms in soybean.

A simple and straightforward approach to access biologically important N-heterocycles, namely bis(trifluoromethylated)-4-aryl-3,4-dihydroquinazolines, bis(trifluoromethylated)-3,4-dihydroquinazoline-4-ols and trifluoromethyl arylketoimines, as a group of important frameworks or initial substance from N-aryltrifluoroacetimidoyl chlorides with benzene derivatives via Friedel-Crafts reaction has been described. This novel strategy provides synthesis of trifluoromethylated dihydroquinazolines and trifluoromethyl arylketoimines in good to excellent yields.

Lipid-based nanoparticles, as drug delivery carriers, are commonly used for the delivery of anti-cancer therapeutic agents. Due to their smaller particle size and similarity to cell membranes, Lipid-based nanoparticles are readily internalized into cancer cells. Cancer cells also overexpress receptors for specific ligands, including folic acid, hyaluronic acid, and transferrin, on their surface, thus, allowing the use of their ligands for surface modification of the lipid-based nanoparticles for their specific recognition by receptors on cancer cells. This would also allow the gradual intracellular accumulation of the targeted functionalized nanoplatforms. These ligand-receptor interactions eventually enhance the internalization of desired drugs by increasing the nanoplatforms cellular uptake. The cellular internalization of the nanoplatforms varies and depends on their physicochemical properties, including particle size, zeta potential, and shape. The cellular uptake is also influenced by the types of ligand internalization pathways utilized by cells, such as phagocytosis, macropinocytosis, and multiple endocytosis pathways. This review classifies and discusses lipidbased nanoparticles engineered to carry specific ligands, their recognition by receptors on cancer cells, and their cellular internalization pathways. Moreover, the intracellular fate of nanoparticles decorated with specific ligands and their best internalization pathway (caveolae-mediated endocytosis) for safe cargo delivery are also discussed.

Diabetes can cause some diseases or abnormalities. One of the disorders caused by diabetes may be erectile dysfunction (ED). ED is sexual dysfunction characterized by the inability to establish or maintain an erect penis during sexual activity and is a common problem of men with chronic type 2 diabetes. These processes, disorders and diseases are highly influenced by the genetics of individuals. In this study, the relationship between genes and diabetes and ED has been explored by a system biology approach. For this purpose, the samples from ten control and diabetic-ED rats were collected. After a search in Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), series with accession number GSE2457 comprising of 5 normal and 5 diabetic-ED rats were selected. Raw CEL files of these samples were normalized with robust multi-array average (RMA) expression measure method by using the linear models for microarray data (LIMMA) R package. The extracted probe IDs were transformed into 10451 unique and validated official gene symbols. Then, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified between control and normal penile mucosa by employing the LIMMA R package. DEGs were classified by utilizing KEGG to underlying pathways by Enrichr. The expression values of DEGs were used to construct a gene regulatory network (GRN), by the GENEI3 R package. To analyze the topology of constructed GRNs, betweenness centrality was calculated. Genes with higher betweenness centrality scores were then identified, through the CytoNCA. We then took the commonality of DEGs genes and high-top ranking genes from CytoNCA via a predicted interaction network using GeneMANIA as the most likely important genes in erectile dysfunction. Among the 374 DEGs studied, 146 DEGs showed up-regulation and 228 DEGs displayed down-regulation expression in diabetic-ED rats. According to the Volcano plot, the dpp4, LOC102553868, Ndufa412, Oxct1, Atp2b3 and Zfp91 gene down-regulated and Lpl, Retsat, B4galt1 and Pdk4 genes up-regulated in ED and diabetic rats. Furthermore, genes like dpp4 acted as hubs in the inferred GRN.

Brain disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease (PD) are irreversible conditions with several cognitive problems, including learning disabilities, memory loss, movement abnormalities, and speech problems. These disorders are caused by a variety of factors, mainly due to the toxic pollutants-induced biochemical changes in protein production, uncontrolled neuronal electrical activity, and altered neurotransmitter levels. Oxidative stress and toxicity associated with the increased glutamate levels decreased acetylcholine levels, and brain inflammation is the main contributing factor. Melatonin hormone is considered one of the potent treatment approaches for neurodegenerative disorders. Melatonin is released from the pineal gland and has a critical role in brain function regulation. Membrane receptors, binding sites, and chemical interaction mediate hormonal actions having multiple phenotypic expressions. It acts as a neurodegenerative agent against some neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), PD, depression, and migraines. Melatonin inhibits neurotoxic pollutants-induced Tau protein hyperphosphorylation, especially in AD. Other pivotal features of melatonin are its anti-inflammatory properties, which decrease pro-inflammatory cytokines expression and factors such as IL-8, IL-6, and TNF. Melatonin also reduces NO (an inflammation factor). In this review, we have highlighted the protective effects of melatonin, mainly spotlighting its neuroprotective mechanisms that will be beneficial to assess their effects in environmental pollution-induced neurodegenerative pathology.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is one of the most common sexual disorders in men. During the past 30 years, there has been no new drug development for ED. Thus, exploring the genetic basis of ED deserves further study, in hope of developing new pharmacological treatments for ED. In this study, Real-Time PCR analysis was used to assess the expression of androgen regulatory protein (Andpro) and pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4 (Pdk4) genes in ED. For this purpose, the experiment was performed on 20 men with severe ED and 20 potent men. IIEF-15 was used to determine the ED severity. The study was conducted in the Department of Sexual Medicine of the Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences, Kermanshah, Iran. The EDTA-Na vacuum blood tube was taken from ED patients and controls. Informed consent was obtained from all participants. After blood sampling, RNA was extracted from whole blood. Then cDNA was synthesized. The gene expression was analyzed through the qPCR method. The ß-actin was used as a reference gene. To further study these two proteins, their three-dimensional structures were predicted through I-TASSER. Compared with controls, in ED patients, the expression of the Andpro gene decreased, while the expression of the Pdk4 gene increased (p<0.01). Predicting the structure of the protein showed that Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Kinase 4 had a double subunit and androgen-regulated protein had a single subunit.

Rapid commercialization, industrialization and the use of nanotechnology has led to an increase in the distribution of nanoparticles (NPs) in the environment. The most common metal oxide NPs which is present within products is Titanium dioxide (TiO2). TiO2 NPs have photocatalytic nature and can affect plant growth. The current study investigated the morphological, anatomical and biochemical features of Baby sun rose (Aptenia cordifolia) after exposure to different concentrations of TiO2 nanoparticles (0, 1, 5, 10 and 20 mg L-1). Treatment with TiO2 NPs showed changes in the morphological features and increased photosynthetic pigmentation within the plant. An increase in the level of phenolics (12%) and flavonoid compounds (13%) was observed when plants were treated with moderate levels of TiO2 NPs. A reduction in the diameter of the vascular bundles and increased thickening of the transverse wall were observed in several samples. The number of scattered vascular bundles in the stems increased. The morphological, biochemical, and anatomical responses of Baby sun rose indicates that plants can adapt to environments contaminated with up to 20 mg L-1 TiO2 NPs. The cultivation of Baby sun rose plants in environments polluted with TiO2 NPs is recommended. This study enhances the knowledge of the effect of TiO2 NPs on the growth of Baby sun rose which is an ornamental plant, widely cultivated in different regions of Iran. The results of this study suggest that contaminated environments up to 20 mg L-1 TiO2 NPs can be managed by phytoremediation. Further studies are needed to investigate this plant's tolerance strategies against stress caused by TiO2 NPs and bulk TiO2 as well as the effect of other nanoparticles on plant.

BACKGROUND: Fatty acids have been observed as independent risk factors of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). In this study we investigated FFA levels in patients with CVD, and, its risk factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this case-control study, 346 unrelated Iranian patients who underwent coronary angiography were enrolled. Participants were categorized into two groups: who had >50% stenosis were assigned to the angiogram positive group (N=90) and those with <30% stenosis were assigned to the angiogram negative group (N=124) and also 222 subjects were healthy. Several risk factors were assessed in all participants, including anthropometric indices, blood pressure, lipid profiles, and biochemical factors. The levels of FFAs were determined using gas chromatography. Serum FFA concentrations were compared between healthy and patients with positive and negative angiograms. The association of serum FFA levels with four major risk factors (hypertension, high fasting blood glucose (FBG) level, high BMI and WHR) were also assessed. RESULTS: According to our data, it has been shown that median of FFAs was higher in patients than healthy subjects (p<0.0001), such as SFA and n6-FFAs (in patients 1.59 (1.27) and 1.22 (1.06), respectively and healthy subjects 0.33 (0.38) and 0.36 (0.35)). According to anthropometric and biochemical data, we did not show statistical differences between the groups, except FBG, SBP and hs-CRP that showed significantly higher levels in the patients than controls (p<0.0001, p=0.001). Also, lower median levels of total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C and DBP were observed in patients which can due to lipid-lowering medication use like Statins. CONCLUSION: High serum levels of FFAs are considered as an independent risk factor for CVDs, while various types of FFAs can have different influences on CVD risk factors. Therefore, longitudinal studies are needed to clarify the association between FFAs and CVD risk factors. A novel, slightly halophilic bacterium, designated TBZ202T, was isolated from water of Urmia Lake, in the Azerbaijan region of north-west Iran. The strain was facultatively anaerobic, Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped and motile. Colonies were creamy, circular, convex and shiny. It grew at NaCl concentrations of 0-12 % (w/v) (optimum 3-5 % w/v), at temperatures of 20-45 °C (optimum 30 °C) and at pH 5.0-10.0 (optimum pH 7.0). Based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence, strain TBZ202T belongs to the genus Halomonas in the Halomonadaceae and the most closely related species are Halomonas gudaonensis CGMCC 1.6133T (98.6 % similarity), Halomonas ventosae Al12T (96.8 %) and Halomonas rambilicola RS-16T (96.6%). The G+C content was 67.9 % and the digital DNA-DNA hybridization and average nucleotide identity values with H. gudaonensis were 35.8 and 83.8 %, respectively, indicating that the isolate differs from all species described. The major fatty acids were C18 : 1 ω7c, C16 : 0 and C16 : 1 ω7c. The only respiratory quinone detected was Q-9 and polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, aminophospholipid and three unknown phospholipids. On the basis of a polyphasic taxonomic analysis, the isolate is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Halomonas, for which the name Halomonas azerbaijanica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TBZ202T (=KCTC 62817T=CECT 9693T).

Erectile dysfunction (ED) can be caused by different diseases and controlled by several genetic networks. In this study, to identify the genes related to ED, the expression profiles of normal and ED samples were investigated by the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Seventeen genes were identified as associated genes with ED. The protein and nucleic acid sequences of selected genes were retrieved from the UCSC database. Selected genes were diverse according to their physicochemical properties and functions. Category function revealed that selected genes are involved in pathways related to humans some diseases. Furthermore, based on protein interactions, genes associated with the insulin pathway had the greatest interaction with the studied genes. To identify the common cis-regulatory elements, the promoter site of the selected genes was retrieved from the UCSC database. The Gapped Local Alignment of Motifs tool was used for finding common conserved motifs into the promoter site of selected genes. Besides, INSR protein as an insulin receptor precursor showed a high potential site for posttranslation modifications, including phosphorylation and N-glycosylation. Also, in this study, two Guanine-Cytosine (GC)-rich regions were identified as conserved motifs in the upstream of studied genes which can be involved in regulating the expression of genes associated with ED. Also, the conserved binding site of miR-29-3p that is involved in various cancers was observed in the 3' untranslated region of genes associated with ED. Our study introduced new genes associated with ED, which can be good candidates for further analyzing related to human ED.

RESUMO

The severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-Coronavirus (CoV2) virus, first identified in Wuhan, China, caused the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) which soon became a global pandemic, as labelled by the World Health Organization (WHO). The transmission method of the infection is primarily through droplets of various sizes. The SARS-CoV2 virus leads to a severe respiratory illness which in the first place causes the simulation of the acute respiratory syndrome. In order to diagnose of COVID-19 efficiently, samples with infection probability need to be examined through histopathological methods. Survival chances of the infected can remarkably increase if the virus is diagnosed timely by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) or computed tomography (CT) scan of the chest. One of the destructive effects of COVID-19 is the formation of ground-glass opacity (GGO) in the lungs which might be regarded to be equivalent to high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE). COVID-19 acts very similarly to SARS and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) which can be inactivated by the chemical compounds of ethanol and sodium hypochlorite. Epidemiologic characteristics of COVID-19 have been indicated by numerous studies; however, there is still a lack of details of pathologic changes in the lung. The present comprehensive review is an attempt to assess and cover the current state of knowledge on COVID-19 disease based on the histopathologic studies conducted before May 2020.

Traditional Chinese medicine has made some progress in the study of liver fibrosis, and provides valuable experience for clinical treatment of liver fibrosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the rationality of compatibility use of Salvia miltiorrhiza and Radix astragali on liver fibrosis in rats. For this purpose, the rat model of liver fibrosis was treated with single or different compatibilities of herbals extracts for 4 weeks. Saline and colchicine were set as a negative and positive control, respectively. Liver histopathology, liver function, and expressions of key proteins in the TGF-ß/Smad/Wnt pathway were assessed. Results showed that compared with colchicine, herbal extracts showed better ability to reduce deposition of α-SMA and type I collagen, and improve liver function. The effect of R. astragali extracts and 1:1 compound on improving liver fibrosis and liver function was relatively better than other treatment options. The compound groups showed a particularly significant effect on reducing Cyclin D1 expression. It was concluded that the 1:1 compatibility use of S. miltiorrhiza extracts and R. astragali extracts can preferably attenuate liver fibrosis by regulating the expression of TGF-ß1 and Cyclin D1.

ABSTRACT: Chickpea (Cicer arietinum) belonging to the Fabaceae family is a major legume crop and is a good source of protein and carbohydrates. Industrialization has resulted in soil contamination with heavy metals such as cadmium. Adsorption of cadmium by plants can lead to reduced yields and heavy metal toxicity. In the current study, changes in the anatomical, morphological features and biochemical properties of the chickpea plant were evaluated. Two indexes DWSTI and PHSTI were determined. Anatomically, there was a change in the number of xylem poles within the root structure which was most significant at treatments of 125 µg cadmium. There was also a noticeable change in leaf pigmentation, the total phenolics and soluble protein in the plant. Cadmium levels were elevated attaining concentrations of 0.21, 0.40 and 0.52 mg per gram dry weight in plants exposed to 62, 125 and 250 µg/g Perlit cadmium after a period of 30 days. A noticeable increase in the level of cadmium in the plant was observed. Two PCS genes, glutathione gamma-glutamylcysteinyltransferase 1 and glutathione gamma-glutamylcysteinyltransferase and four FC genes, 4 proteins and 4 mRNA were detected in chickpeas. Bioinformatics tools were utilized to predict enzyme structure and binding sites. Chickpea may be classified as a cadmium hyperaccumulator and may be considered for use in phytoremediation. This study provides a better understanding with regards to the response of chickpeas to cadmium and the genetic mechanism by which the plant regulates heavy metal toxicity.

Reference intervals (RIs) are important tools for improving medical decision-making. Hematology reference values can be influenced by important covariates such as genetic and environmental factors, rendering it essential to define RIs for specific populations. Therefore, we aimed to establish accurate and robust RIs for hematological markers in a healthy adult male Iranian population. This cross-sectional study was conducted in a population of 723 males aged 20-60 years old. Hematological parameters were routinely measured using a Sysmex auto analyser system (KX-21 N). The quality of assays was monitored using commercial quality control samples. The nonparametric rank method, as recommended by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines, was used to calculate the 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles as the lower and upper reference limits, respectively. Of the 12 hematological parameters assessed, only mean platelet volume (MPV) demonstrated significant age-specific differences, requiring two partitions from 20 to 35 years (8.7-12.2 fL) and 35 to 65 years (8.5-11.5 fL). The remaining hematological parameters (e.g. leukocyte, erythrocyte, and platelet parameters) could be defined by one age range. This study established RIs for 12 routinely used hematological parameters in a healthy male population living in the northeastern region of Iran. Established RIs differed from those previously reported by other cohorts, highlighting the importance of population-specific RIs.
